Aso is most famous for the Aso volcanic. Aso volcanic is an active volcanic, and one of few craters could be watched close in the world. But you need luck to go to the crater. Base on the eruption level alert of Mt. Aso, The crater is not likely open every day.
You have to take 2 bus to the crater. 1st bus is Aso Sta.mae(阿蘇駅前) to Asosan Nishi-Sta.(阿蘇山西駅). 2ed bus is Aso-san Loop Shuttle Bus. If you like mountain climbing, you might not need to take the 2ed bus. You can walk to the crater from Asosan Nishi-Sta. Asosan Nishi-Sta. is in front of Aso Super Ring. If you will go to the crater, don't forget buy some food in "michinoeki aso(道の駅 阿蘇)" nearby the Aso train station in advance. Aso Super Ring do not offer rice ball or soup noddle.

Aso is also very charming for the nature. People call it as Southern Alps. You can buy one day ticket for 1st bus, and go to Kusasenri(草千里). It's very comfortable place.
If you have enough time, you can go Aso Shrine(ASO JINJA 阿蘇神社). Aso Shrine with a history of 2,300 years is the total headquarters of Aso Shrine with about 500 companies nationwide! Although it is currently being restored due to the influence of the Kumamoto earthquake, it is only designated as a country important cultural asset.
The end of Aso Shrine is an entrance of the main shop treet, it's called "水基巡りの道". There are dozens of spring spots called "water basin" near the entrance of various shops, you can drink delicious water freely.
